City play the long game as Chelsea's £120m Fernandez standoff drags on
There is a familiar rhythm to this kind of transfer standoff. A club names its price, sets a deadline, and waits for the phone to ring. Chelsea have done exactly that with Enzo Fernandez, slapping a £120m valuation on the midfielder and telling City they had until Friday to meet it.
City have not rung. Enzo Maresca has made it clear the club will not be rushed into a deal, and so the ball sits firmly in Chelsea's court as they begin sketching out contingency plans.
The Blues are understood to be eyeing midfield replacements — Martin Zubimendi and Alex Scott are among the names mentioned — should Fernandez actually depart. That suggests Stamford Bridge is at least preparing for the possibility that their record signing moves on, even if the asking price suggests they are in no hurry to sell.
City, though, are not prepared to do that today, with Enzo Maresca confirming that the club will not meet the deadline.
Fernandez remains on City's radar as they weigh up their midfield options, and his previous working relationship with Maresca is an obvious pull. So too is the uncertainty swirling around Rodri, with Barcelona continuing to push for the Spain international despite City rejecting their approaches so far.
Should Rodri go, City's entire midfield calculus changes. That is the thread Chelsea are presumably pulling on, hoping the picture becomes clearer sooner rather than later.
For now, City are not meeting that £120m valuation. With more than two weeks of the window still to run, neither side can be entirely sure how this ends.
