Manchester City will host Bradford City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after another night of spot-kick drama at the Etihad.

The draw hands Enzo Maresca's side a third successive home tie in the competition, with the Bantams set to visit Manchester for the first time in more than two decades.

Rulli the hero as City edge Brighton

Wednesday night's fourth-round tie against Brighton had threatened to slip away from City. Twice the Blues fell behind, and twice they responded — Mateo Kovačić and Vitor Reis finding the net in a 2-2 draw that carried the contest to penalties.

Gerónimo Rulli, the back-up goalkeeper, proved the difference in the shootout. City converted their chances and ran out 4-3 winners on spot-kicks to book their place in the last eight.

The reward is a home quarter-final, likely to be played on Tuesday 15 December — squeezed between Premier League fixtures against Chelsea on Saturday 12 December and Hull City a week later on the 19th.

Bradford's cup pedigree

Bradford arrive at the Etihad fourth in EFL League One and chasing a return to the second tier for the first time since 2003/04. Their route to the quarter-finals has been eventful: Rochdale seen off, Burnley beaten on penalties, then Leyton Orient and Peterborough United despatched.

The West Yorkshire club famously reached the 2013 League Cup Final, and they will travel in good spirits. History offers little encouragement, mind. Bradford have won just one of 14 meetings with City since 1926, with the Blues claiming 10 of those. The clubs last faced each other in March 2002, and this will be their first-ever League Cup clash.

For those wanting to watch, all 92 Carabao Cup matches are broadcast in the UK and Ireland by Sky Sports, with ITV showcasing one tie free-to-air per round.
