Maresca targets former charge

Manchester City have been given permission to open talks with Chelsea over right-back Malo Gusto, with the Frenchman's existing relationship with new boss Enzo Maresca believed to be a key factor.

Sources have told Football Insider that Maresca has identified Gusto as his primary target to strengthen the right-back position this summer, having taken over at the Etihad.

The position has been something of a patchwork solution in recent times. Matheus Nunes, a midfielder by trade, was Guardiola's preferred option there last season, while Rico Lewis served as back-up but has been linked with a departure after struggling for regular minutes.

Competition at Chelsea

Gusto, currently at the World Cup with France after making 56 appearances across all competitions last term, faces increased competition at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have already signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta this summer, adding to a group that already includes Gusto and Reece James.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, it was explained: "I think Gusto potentially could be lured away. Obviously, Chelsea have brought in a new right back in Palestra from Atalanta, and you've got Reece James also, so there is a lot of competition for places at Stamford Bridge."

"There is a mutual admiration between Gusto and Enzo Maresca. They've worked together before and I think Maresca is a big fan of Gusto. If Man City do firm up their interest, it might mean that he is open to making the move to the Etihad."

Lewis situation

Meanwhile, the uncertainty around Rico Lewis continues. The 21-year-old was close to joining Nottingham Forest last summer but instead signed a new five-year contract extension in September. He made just 11 Premier League appearances last term, with Nunes largely preferred at right-back, and even less game time is expected in the upcoming campaign.

Forest remain interested in Lewis, while sources have indicated that Everton are also admirers. David Moyes has made signing a new right-back one of his top priorities this summer.
