City finally make their move for Enzo Fernandez
Manchester City have made an official approach to Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, according to Fabrizio Romano. The move, long rumoured, finally has some substance to it.
Romano reports that this is the first time the Blues have formally engaged with the London club over the World Cup-winning midfielder. Fernandez now waits on Chelsea's response to City's bid.
It is not hard to see why Enzo Maresca would want him. The City manager has worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and believes the Argentine can be a strong addition to his squad. Familiarity, in this case, appears to be a factor.
There is, of course, the other side of the coin. Fernandez's involvement in a racism and homophobic chant controversy after Argentina's Copa America win in 2024 remains a stain on his record. That is not something that simply disappears because a manager likes the player.
For now, the ball is in Chelsea's court. Whether they accept City's approach, and what Fernandez himself decides, remains to be seen. But the silence has been broken.
