Winger chase conditional on Brazilian departure
Manchester City have joined the list of clubs tracking Sporting Lisbon winger Francisco Trincão, though any move hinges on Savinho leaving the Etihad this summer, according to reports in Portugal.
The 26-year-old Portuguese international had been on the verge of a move to Saudi Arabia, with Al Ahli understood to be leading the chase and willing to meet Sporting's £42 million valuation while offering Trincão a substantial salary increase. But following Portugal's World Cup exit, the winger has decided to slow things down and assess whether a move to Europe's elite remains possible before committing to the lucrative offer.
That pause has given Premier League interest time to develop more seriously, and City's ongoing search for a winger has been one of the more active threads of their summer rebuild. Trincão's style — direct running, creativity and goal threat from wide areas — fits closely with what Hugo Viana and Enzo Maresca have identified as priorities in that part of the pitch.
Viana's familiarity with Trincão from his time at Sporting gives City a meaningful edge in any potential pursuit. The director of football worked closely with the winger and knows his character and game in a way few rival sporting directors can claim.
Portuguese newspaper Record, relayed by Sport Witness, report that Maresca is an admirer of Trincão's profile, with Viana's existing knowledge adding further weight to any potential move. But the report contains a significant caveat: City will only make a concrete offer if Savinho departs this summer, with the Brazilian's future still unresolved.
That condition introduces Tottenham as a direct subplot. Spurs have been the club most prominently and consistently linked with a move for Savinho in recent months — a pursuit that, if completed, could simultaneously unlock City's ability to go for Trincão while removing him from Tottenham's own winger shortlist.
Agent Jorge Mendes is also involved, raising the possibility that the public emergence of interest from City and Spurs forms part of a broader negotiating strategy aimed at extracting an improved salary offer from Al Ahli or generating genuine European competition to raise Sporting's leverage.
The conditional nature of City's interest is the key detail here. It is not a straightforward winger pursuit but one whose viability depends entirely on a separate piece of outgoing business being resolved first — a sequence not yet close to being confirmed.
Should Savinho depart, whether to Tottenham or another suitor, Viana would be freed to pursue a replacement in earnest. Trincão's profile, his existing relationship with the director of football and his availability from a club Viana knows intimately would make him a natural first port of call rather than a peripheral option.
The £42 million valuation Sporting have placed on Trincão is significantly below what City have been willing to pay at the top of their recruitment priorities this summer. If the Savinho condition is met, the financial parameters of a deal would not be the primary obstacle.
Whether Saudi Arabia ultimately proves Trincão's destination, or whether a Premier League move materialises in the coming weeks, may be determined as much by what happens in City's outgoing business as by anything the player or Sporting themselves decide.
