Manchester City's recruitment radar has settled on Alex Baena, the Atletico Madrid midfielder who helped Spain lift the World Cup. Football Insider reports that the Blues are monitoring the 25-year-old, though a January approach is not on the cards.
Baena's profile fits the modern City midfield template. He is comfortable on either flank or through the middle, and his numbers this season make for pleasant reading: three goals in four league appearances. Those are the kind of contributions that tend to accelerate a club's interest.
The Spain international also chipped in with two goal contributions during the World Cup campaign, underlining his ability to produce on the biggest stage. For a side that values versatility and output from midfield, Baena ticks several boxes at once.
