World Cup Watch

Manchester City are monitoring the situation of Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland as questions linger over the depth behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian remains the undisputed number one heading into the new campaign, but the structural cover behind him has grown increasingly fragile. Recruitment staff have been scouring for a cost-effective contingency — someone who could slot into a winning environment while accepting a back-up role.

That search has led them to the World Cup in North America, where Norway's impressive run has put several of their players in the shop window. According to The Sun, Nyland is one of them.

The 35-year-old is currently without a club after leaving Sevilla upon the expiry of his contract, making him a rare zero-cost option. Leeds United and three other British clubs are also said to be keen on the shot-stopper.

Trafford Uncertainty

City's interest in Nyland is understood to be linked to doubts over James Trafford's future. The young goalkeeper continues to attract interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

Trafford returned to City from Burnley just 12 months ago on the understanding he would become the club's new first-choice, succeeding Ederson. But the club signed Donnarumma on deadline day instead, shifting the pecking order.

With international campaigns winding down over the coming week, Nyland is expected to weigh his options swiftly. That could force City to decide whether to accelerate their pursuit or turn elsewhere — with Sheffield Wednesday youngster Pierce Charles understood to be closing in on a move to the Etihad.
