City edging closer to Fernandez capture
Manchester City's long-standing interest in Enzo Fernandez appears to be reaching its conclusion, with reports suggesting the club are finally ready to make their move.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that City are set to bid for the Chelsea midfielder, having completed the player sales needed to free up space in Enzo Maresca's squad. The funds are in place for what would be an expensive operation.
Romano also states that City have been in constant contact with Fernandez's camp, suggesting the groundwork has been laid for some time.
Chelsea, for their part, have set their own conditions. The London club will only consider selling Fernandez if they can improve their squad before the transfer window closes. That caveat, combined with the fact their self-imposed deadline to sell the Argentine passed two weeks ago, leaves the situation delicately poised.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, speaking after his side opened the 2026-27 Premier League season with a 3-2 win over Fulham, was typically guarded when asked about his midfielder's future.
"In football, I am not surprised by anything. We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week."
Alonso's hope for clarity this week suggests a resolution may be imminent, one way or the other. For City, the pieces appear to be falling into place.
