Midfielder set to sign on
Charlie Gray is nearing an agreement on a new Manchester City contract after his previous deal expired, according to reports.
The 20-year-old central midfielder, highly regarded within the club's academy system, has been weighing up multiple options from across Europe. But there has been a clear desire from within the Etihad to keep him, and that now appears to be winning out.
Several EFL clubs had been monitoring Gray's contract situation closely in recent weeks, prompting City's academy officials to act to prevent a departure. The decision to offer fresh terms reflects a broader strategy of retaining key academy assets rather than losing them for minimal compensation.
According to Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News, Gray was offered new terms as his previous deal wound down, and an agreement is now close.
While the midfielder's long-term future remains somewhat uncertain, a new contract would end any immediate doubt. It could also see him join Enzo Maresca's squad for the pre-season tour of Asia, which includes three matches and a highly-anticipated clash with Inter Milan in Hong Kong on August 1.
Senior players return to the training ground on July 20, and Maresca is expected to use the coming weeks to evaluate the academy's best prospects up close before finalising his tactical plans.
Should the coaching staff decide Gray isn't quite ready for first-team minutes under the new manager, a season-long loan — likely to a Championship side — remains a strong possibility for late August.
