Extra-time heartbreak for City's Norwegian contingent
Erling Haaland's World Cup dream is over. Norway's run came to a halt in Miami as an England side featuring several Manchester City players edged a tense quarter-final 2-1 after extra time.
Jude Bellingham was the difference. Twice. The Real Madrid midfielder dragged England back from the brink, first drawing them level in first-half stoppage time after Norway had taken a deserved lead, then prodding home the winner three minutes into the additional period.
Norway had seized the initiative just before the hour mark. Harry Kane was caught in possession inside his own half, and Schjelderup's cross-shot from the left flew in off the post. It was the kind of goal that leaves defenders cursing their luck and strikers dreaming of more.
England might have been in deeper trouble had Jordan Pickford not been at his sharpest. The Everton keeper, making a record-breaking 18th World Cup appearance for England, got down to his left to keep out Martin Odegaard's low effort as Norway threatened to extend their advantage.
But Bellingham had other ideas. His equaliser in first-half stoppage time sent the sides in level, and through 90 minutes neither could find a winner. A Norway goal was chalked off early in the second half for a foul by Haaland in the build-up, while England's hopes of a penalty were also dashed by VAR.
Extra time proved decisive. Three minutes in, Morgan Rogers' long-range shot was spilled by Norway goalkeeper Nyland, and Bellingham was quickest to react, prodding home the rebound and sparking jubilant scenes on the England bench.
Kane has now scored six goals at this World Cup, matching Gary Lineker's 1986 tournament tally, though it was Bellingham who wrote the headlines.
England will face Lionel Messi and Argentina in one semi-final, with France meeting Spain in the other. For Haaland and Norway, there's only the long flight home and the knowledge of how close they came.
