Midfield Reinforcements on the Horizon
Manchester City's summer shopping list appears to have grown by one name. Reports have linked the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, a player who has suddenly emerged as a viable option in the club's search for midfield depth.
Two separate outlets have flagged Wharton as a potential target. Jack Rosser of The Sun suggests City could consider a move for the England international, while Ben Ransom of Sky Sports indicates that while Wharton wasn't initially on the club's list of targets, that stance has softened.
The reported price tag? Palace's asking price is unknown, but Rosser hints that a package of up to £100 million might be required to prise him away from Selhurst Park.
What Wharton Would Bring
At 22, Wharton is still young, but his qualities are already well established. He possesses elite vision, scans the pitch exceptionally well before receiving the ball, and can execute every pass in the book. His left foot is a wand, capable of breaking open a game in an instant. His ability to break the lines with a decisive ball is almost second to none in English football.
There is, however, a caveat. Wharton's biggest weakness is his work out of possession. He isn't elite in that regard, struggling in physical duels and covering the pitch effectively. It's a knock that has followed him throughout his career.
The Current Midfield Picture
City currently have Anderson, Mateo Kovacic, and Nico Gonzalez as recognised midfielders who could form a double pivot. Nico O'Reilly and Rico Lewis could also slot into that role. The club are clearly looking to bolster this area of the pitch, and Wharton's name now joins the conversation.
Ransom also reports that the expectation is City will make a move for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, which suggests Wharton might not be the primary target. But with two reports naming him, it's clear he's on the radar.
Whether City are willing to meet Palace's demands remains to be seen. The price tag, if it does reach £100 million, would be a significant investment in a player with clear talent but also clear limitations. For now, Wharton is a name to watch as the summer window continues.
